Butterflies

Image
This weekend the butterflies decided to come out of their chrysalis. This is a picture of the empty cocoons they left behind.  Yesterday on our zoom meeting we released the butterflies.   We also talked about what they liked to eat.  I had strawberries in the bottom of my net for the butterflies to eat.

Day 9: The caterpillars stopped eating and decided to hang upside down on the top of the container. There it spun itself into a shiny chrysalis.  Within its protective casing, the caterpillar radically transforms it's body, it will eventually emerge as a butterfly.   During our last Zoom meeting, we moved the Chrysalis into a butterfly net, where it will stay until it becomes a butterfly. The flowing link is to a fun video I found that explains the lifecycle of a butterfly. https://youtu.be/V5RSpMQQOpw

Class Caterpillars

Day one:  I received 5 tiny caterpillars. They are so small.  The bottom of the plastic container is full of food the caterpillars will eat.  Day 3:  The caterpillars are getting a little bit bigger and starting to eat the food at the bottom of the container.   Day 7: The caterpillars have been very busy eating food and getting bigger and bigger.  They are also spinning webs. The webbing protects the caterpillar from many dangers. Caterpillars use the webbing to stick to plants, as the wind can easily blow them off the leaves. Caterpillars also use the silk to pull leaves around themselves to hide from predators that might like to eat them.  Day 8:  The caterpillars are crawling up to the top to start to make a chrysalis. After they make a chrysalis I will move them into a net and the will stay there until they become butterflies. I will post more pictures soon.  Miss you and Love you! Mrs. Thurmond
